Tamara Varney, from Thunder Bay, took home $10,075 after winning the Feb. 18 Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC) Foundation 50/50 draw.

Tamara Varney, from Thunder Bay, has an extra $10,075 in her bank account after having her winning ticket number, N-6544422, drawn during the Feb. 18 Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC) Foundation 50/50 draw.

Varney, a professor at Lakehead University, who also supports Dryden and Thunder Bay lotteries, has never won anything before today. She plans to save most of her winnings. “I don’t really need anything,” she said.

Despite this, she likes to participate. Diligently purchasing tickets each month, Varney already has her tickets for the March draw!

“It’s the perfect fundraiser,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to support a good cause and win something for yourself.”

Varney tends to focus on her work and has an additional part-time teaching position at Northern Ontario School of Medicine. She is passionate about education and the medical field, and has heard of the wonderful care offered by SLMHC.

“I am impressed with the culturally appropriate and safe programs for indigenous people,” she said. She is happy to support Sioux Lookout health care.
