Our MRI Campaign is COMPLETE – Together, We Did It!

SLMHC Foundation announces completion of the MRI campaing with Sioux Lookout’ s first ever MRI now under construction

We did it – The Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre Foundation’s MRI Campaign is complete! On December 1, 2023 we officially kicked off our multi-million-dollar MRI campaign with the goal to bring Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services to SLMHC and our region.  Early in 2025, the Ontario Government announced their financial commitment assist with the first-ever MRI machine in Sioux Lookout. On September 16, 2025 ground breaking for the brand new state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Suite at SLMHC happened! With construction officially underway, our goals of bringing these essential services to our area have come full circle, thus meaning our MRI campaign has now officially come to an end.

MRI Services at SLMHC will provide much needed diagnostic imaging services to over 50,000 North Western Ontario residents making equitable and timely access to health care more feasible for many. Services will benefit not only people living in Sioux Lookout and throughout the neighboring 31 surrounding communities (including many First Nation Communities accessible only by air), but will provide some relief financially and with less travel for much of the Northwestern region including those in Dryden, Ignace, Machin, Eagle Lake, Vermillion Bay, Wabigoon Lake, Balmertown and Red Lake. Currently, patients in these areas endure wait times and required travel for MRI scans in both Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. An MRI unit at SLMHC will improve access to health care service for our patients, and it will reduce wait times as patients look to access MRI scans.

The SLMHC Foundation is incredibly proud to have played a role in the MRI Project, helping to meet the critical needs of patients at Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre. We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received throughout our fundraising journey. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and organizations alike, the MRI machine is now a reality for our community. Our heartfelt thanks go out to every donor.

As we celebrate this milestone, our work continues—committed to supporting the hospital’s ongoing capital equipment needs. With the hospital’s CT Scan Machine and Mammography Unit both nearing end of life, the Foundation’s efforts to raise money will remain ongoing and future funds raised will continue to be directed to the Equipment Fund.
